Surabaya Survey Center (SSC) Researcher: Prabowo’s attitude is wise
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Political observer and senior researcher at Surabaya Survey Center (SSC) Surokim Abdussalam stated that Prabowo Subianto’s decision to prohibit his supporters from demonstrating at the Supreme Court (MK) was appropriate.
“I think it is a wise and prudent action and part of a statesmanlike spirit. These days, one could say that there is a deficit of statesmanlike souls,” he said in a written statement in Jakarta on Friday.
According to him, Prabowo’s step was right and showed mature and wise political practice. Because it prioritizes harmony and provides coolness in the midst of a situation that is heating up again ahead of the MK verdict reading.
“Prabowo’s firmness to calm his supporters, for the sake of longer-term interests,” he said.
He said that Prabowo could have allowed the claimed 100,000 demonstrators to convey their aspirations at the MK. However, it is considered to bring more harm than benefit.
“It’s not easy for people to be statesmanlike, who prioritize the interests of the country, prioritize the interests of the future, prioritize larger futuristic interests. So if Mr. Prabowo has such an extraordinary attitude, it should be appreciated in my opinion,” he asserted.
Surokim continued to say that Prabowo’s step should also be emulated by other presidential candidates or party elites, providing education to their supporters to maintain harmony and not provoke disturbances.
“Other elites and figures should do the same to educate the public, to provide guidance to the public. So statesmanship simultaneously gives real guidance that is practiced by him,” he explained.
Surokim said that Prabowo also believes in the legal mechanism at the MK, will provide justice so there is no need to carry out actions outside the legal path. This is one of the statesmanlike practices that Prabowo possesses.
“Prabowo is well aware, still believes in the legal mechanism and does not need to take to the streets or even resort to violence,” he said.
Furthermore, Surokim said that although the MK decision may not please all parties, he urged presidential candidates, party elites, and the public to accept whatever decision the MK will announce with an open heart.
