Incorporating Nutrition Education into School Curriculum for Better Growth

The National Nutrition Agency (Badan Gizi Nasional, BGN) is pushing for the integration of nutrition education into the national school curriculum to create a healthier and globally competitive generation of Indonesians. According to Ikeu Tanziha, a member of BGN’s Nutrition Expert Council, structured nutrition education in schools is essential for developing a strong foundation of nutritional knowledge from an early age.

By including nutrition education in the curriculum, students will learn about basic nutritional concepts, food group classification, the role of nutrients in the body, and the consequences of unhealthy eating habits. This education will help students understand the importance of a balanced diet, make informed dietary choices, and acquire practical skills like cooking and gardening.

The goal is to establish a coordinated effort between schools, families, and communities to promote balanced nutrition and prevent diet-related illnesses such as obesity and diabetes. BGN believes that incorporating nutrition education into the school system will empower students to lead healthier lives, support disease prevention efforts, and enhance overall quality of life in the future.

As part of their efforts to promote nutrition education, BGN has utilized social media platforms like YouTube to spread awareness about the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) Program. The agency is also encouraging government bodies, schools, parents, the media, and the public to rally behind the implementation of nutrition education in schools as part of Indonesia’s vision for the Golden Generation 2045.

Ikeu emphasized that the Free Nutritious Meals Program will achieve its full potential when complemented by comprehensive nutrition education that resonates with all segments of society. The integration of nutrition education into the school curriculum is seen as a crucial step towards creating a healthier and more knowledgeable population in Indonesia.
