Irene’s tragic story was revealed by her sister-in-law, Ivon Kabey. Ivon strongly suspects that the cause of her sister’s death was due to delayed treatment and rejection of referrals at several hospitals in Jayapura City. The family arrived at RSUD Yowari at 3:00 PM with Irene being a six cm opening and ruptured membranes patient, but the delivery process was not handled because of the suspicion of a large baby, weighing four kilograms. The family then requested a referral acceleration as Irene’s condition became more restless. However, the referral letter was only completed close to midnight, followed by the ambulance arriving at 1:22 AM. The referral process was not as smooth as they thought. Irene and her unborn baby visited three hospitals but did not receive treatment until she passed away en route. In urgent situations, every hospital they visited adamantly refused to treat Irene for various reasons. They were rejected by RS Dian Harapan and RS Abe due to full rooms and facility renovations. They then went to RS Bayangkara, where the patient was not accepted without an upfront payment of Rp4 million. As they were on their way to RS Dok II, Irene passed away at 5:00 AM. Ivon deeply regrets this incident. Her sister-in-law had to pass away along with her unborn baby due to the slow response from the hospitals. She expressed her disappointment in how her sister-in-law was not properly treated from the beginning, being rejected by several hospitals until she tragically passed away while pregnant.
